Governance Committees

There are 15 “behind-the-scenes” committees at Calvin that are comprised of faculty, staff, and students. Each of these committees oversee separate initiatives, such as reducing core, maintaining sustainability, and promoting diversity and inclusion. You, as a student, can apply to serve on these committees.

All of Calvin’s governance committees that involve students are listed below, sorted by intensive and less-intensive committee appointments.

Applications open towards the end of the Spring Semester.

  • Core Curriculum Committee (2 Student Representatives)

    The Core Curriculum governance committee, commonly known as the CORE Committee, meets four times a month to insure that the core curriculum required by Calvin University is relevant, up to standard, and meets the statements of purpose and mission of Calvin University. They recently revamped the entire Calvin core.

    Educational Policy Committee (1 Student Representative)

    Is maintaining the Christian integrity of a Calvin education important to you? The EPC Committee meets to review and articulate the message conveyed by a Calvin education. As the definition of a Calvin education is ever-changing, this group meets four times a month to maintain a high standard.

    Planning and Priorities (2 Student Representatives)

    The Planning and Priorities Committee (PPC) meets with the long term direction of Calvin University in mind. When meeting once a month, the PPC committee evaluates specific needs, priorities and concerns in the Calvin community, and sets a plan to upkeep and affirm Calvin’s mission statement long into the future.

  • Traffic Violations Appeals Committee (2 Student Representatives)

    If a student, staff or faculty member receives a traffic violation ticket, the student, faculty, or staff member can appeal the ticket with the Appeal Board. The Appeal Board’s decision is final.  The Appeal Board does not meet the students in person but receive appeals through the online appeal form. The reasons for appeal are usually fairly standard from week to week-running late for class, forgot that I parked my vehicle in that area, never drive to campus, etc. The goal of this committee is to give students a second chance.

    Student Publications Committee (2 Student Representatives)

    The Student Publications Committee is the publisher of all student publications. It formulates policy, guides program direction, and supervise policy and practice for student publications by establishing oversight for student communications media, developing policy governing student publications, ensuring that student have the resources and mentoring to gain meaningful and relevant experience in these media, and assuring the continuity of responsible leadership for student publications.

    Environmental and Energy Sustainability (2 Student Representatives)

    This committee advocates for the implementation of the Calvin Statement on Sustainability and serve as a structure for the exchange of information and communication among the decision making units that influence environmental and energy sustainability. They also recommend to responsible parties environmental stewardship and sustainability standards and guidelines for campus services and activities. Track progress of sustainability efforts on campus and present annual reports to the Faculty Senate.

    Committee on Gender Equity (2 Student Representatives)

    This committee advises and works with standing committees, divisions, and personnel throughout the university to ensure that gender equity concerns are addressed.

    Clean Water Institute Governing Board (2 Student Representatives)

    This committee focuses on improving community health by advancing the understanding and practices for providing appropriate and necessary drinking water solutions.

    Committee on Off-Campus Programs (2 Student Representatives)

    This committee ensures that off-campus programs of the university shall be consistent with the educational policy of the university and the needs, wants, and desires of students.

    Rhetoric Across the Curriculum (2 Student Representatives)

    This committee is in charge of overseeing and facilitating written and visual rhetoric class discussions pertaining to the Calvin core. They recommend policy and curriculum change to university leaders.

    Information Services Committee (1 Student Representatives)

    This committee serves the university in all matters regarding information technology (IT) in all programs of the university. The committee recommends policy regarding IT to university leaders.

    Committee on Governance (1 Student Representative)

    This committee works on mandating and monitoring all Governance Committees. This includes ensuring that all committees are meeting and providing a level of oversight on the university’s governance structure.

    Interim Term Committee (1 Student Representative)

    This committee is responsible for recommending interim guidelines and policies, including budget guidelines, to the faculty.

    Ecosystem Preserve Governing Board (1 Student Representative)

    This committee preserves, restores and interprets native ecosystems to inspire people to value and protect the wonders of creation.

    Hekman Library Committee (1 Student Representative)

    This committee oversees and recommends policy for the Hekman Library, as well as governs the affairs of the library.
